On May 18, the once strict lockdown in Italy began to ease. The epidemiological curve's peak had come on March 21, with 6,557 new coronavirus cases, and on mid-may new cases were around 500 every day. With the improved situation, and the gradually reopening of the country, museums and cultural institutions were also allowed to resume their operations after being closed for more than 70 days.
