The small but energetic Cornish School of Music, founded there [in Seattle] in 1914 by Nellie Cornish, was a hub of activity: vanguard dancers, actors, musicians, and painters, all established professionals, were drawn to it.

Artists associated with the school included Mark Tobey, Morris Graves, John Cage, Merce Cunningham, László Moholy-Nagy, Giörgy Kepes and Martha Graham. The Cornish School of Music is, today, the Cornish College of the Arts.
