By the late 1950s, Martin’s biomorphic works were supplanted by highly simplified geometric abstractions. These paintings were featured at her first show in New York, which took place at Section Eleven, an annex of the Betty Parsons Gallery, in 1958.

Reinhardt, Newman, and Kenzo Okada, another loyalist, also understood that new talent was needed to invigorate Parsons' stable of artists. A small room, next to the large windowless main space, was named Section Eleven (for its actual address, next door) and readied to welcome Betty's latest discoveries.
