"After Sultan Selim III examined Hagia Sophia in person in 1573, he instructed Sinan - who retained the post of chief architect that had been conferred upon him by Selim’s father, Suleiman - to pull down the excrescent buildings and render the mosque secure. [...] Meanwhile, Sinan designed and built, for two successive sultans, the remaining two minarets. He also carried out extensive internal and external repairs."
