On October 24, 1935, a Nationalist Party demonstration was held at the University of Puerto Rico, after Pedro Albizu Campos was declared persona non grata on campus. At the time, the Chancellor of the University was Dr. Carlos E. Chardón, who had ties to the Liberal Party and had been appointed by the then-governor of Puerto Rico, Theodore Roosevelt. Conflict between the Nationalist Party supporters and police officers resulted in four members of the Party being killed, and one police officer wounded.
This timespace is inspired by the 7th chapter of the book How to Hide an Empire, by Daniel Immerwahr. It tells the life of Puerto Rican nationalist Pedro Albizu Campos in the context of other nationalist movements and U.S. interventions in Latin America.
